William Gibson, author of the 1982 novel Neuromancer is considered to have been one of the fathers of the cyberpunk movement in science fiction. Less well known is his book The Difference Engine, written with Robert Sterling in 1991 and a major catalyst for steampunk -- a style of steam age technofantasy lust thats been embraced by such luminaries as Thomas Pynchon in his most recent book and Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki in his film Howl's Moving Castle ( or Hauru no ugoku shiro).
Steampunk has been making its way into design, and here is a particularly neat example:
